Two-phase stainless steels with a metallurgical structure of austenite and ferrite, commonly called duplex, have an excellent combination of mechanical properties and resistance to corrosion, especially if compared to the common stainless steels.
In off-shore engineering that allows for the designing of components
with lesser thickness (and therefore lighter), without compromising their resistance to corrosion and thus avoiding the use of expensive corrosion resistant coatings.
From the welding point of view, duplex steels need to be treated in the same way as
austenitic stainless steels, but with dedicated caution to limit the sensibilization of the joints if they are welded with too lenient heat cycles.
